Nails have been a much loved material since we did the sensory hammering work last month. When my kids are interested in activities, I do what I can to capitalize on their interest. Hammering Shapes (item number V536) is the perfect activity from For Small Hands for both kids! Shapes and nails all in one open play work!

I have allowed the kids to use real materials in the kitchen since they were tall enough to stand on our stool. From an early age, the kids have had a real tool box of their own. They mimic us in our DIY projects around the home. But creating a learning activity from it has escaped me. I wanted to help them be more intentional in their work and learn while they work in their own free play.

I love Hammering Shapes! Everything you need for a great open play is in one box. Samuel is really into following instructions while working with his Lego sets and following recipes. I wasn’t to surprised he arranged his Hammering Shapes materials to create the truck example given.

The concentration this activity provided him lasted for over an hour. There is a great lesson on how to present this material on Study At Home Mama. After completing this first activity, the nails and shapes pull out easily in order to give room for more open ended work. Boys and girls alike will love this activity.

Avalyn has been working on shape recognition and colors. As Samuel worked on creating his truck, she decided to divide the shapes into colors! Such a great child led work. It won’t be long before Avalyn feels confident enough to work on this fine motor work as well.
